Romance--The Next Generation

It's happened. I knew it would. And now it has. My oldest chicken (11 1/2) has started reading romances. It was inevitable, I know. But it still tickles me. She's starting out with the Avalon Romances. You know, the ones with pastel, faded covers and lips ALMOST touching each other. It's so damn cute I can hardly stand it.

We've already had "THE TALK", so I know she knows the mechanics of sex. And she knows my door is always open to any other questions she may have. And I believe we'll hold off on the more explicit books for another couple of years. But I LOVE the fact she's reading them. Reminds me of me back in the day. Of course, my Mother had no idea I was reading "Lucky" and Jackie Collins and such. OH, BABY! She would've freaked smooth out. Ignorance, to her, was bliss.

I plan on keeping an eye on Miss Thang. We'll see how she progresses down the romance road. And I'll wait for the inevitable..."Can I read yours?"

Your eldest is about the age I was when I discovered Barbara Cartland -- I think I swallowed about twenty of them in about a week and a half. It was only a few years latter that we got things like Flame and the Flower and Shanna and boy, was I ready for them. A few Cartlands were fun, but it didn't take long for me to realize there had to be something more than this.

Funny, but she's also about the same age as I was when my mother and I had "the talk." In my case, it was more than just letting me know how things went -- I was also portraying Juliet in a local production and and the director (a friend of the family) asked Mom to explain what was going on in the scene where Romeo leaves Verona because she didn't think I quite understood. She also thought it was her place to impart that info, so it fell to my mother.

Yup, life upon the wicked stage ain't nothing what a girl supposes. :)

Caro: YES! I read Barbara Cartland, too. And I felt the same way as you. I loved the picture on the back of all them. She always looked so elegant. But something was just lacking for me.
And then came the Lindsey's, Woodiwiss', and the Devereaux's. And I found what I was looking for.

Wow. If I had to be on stage, acting, I would probably pass out. And not the graceful kind either. LOL

I started out with Victoria Holt when I was twelve. I worked my way up to the sweet Regencies and then one day I got a hold of a Deveraux. Woo! I couldn't get enough of the historicals. Loved them.

Michelle: Oh man! Devereaux changed the direction of my little world. I went for the "clinch" covers from then on. Heh
Suzanne: Tell me about it. I just KNOW she's going to be educated by HQN and SIL. I remember discovering Harlequin back in the day. And I went through them like a sugar addict with M & M's. Mmmmmmmmm

My 13-yr-old goddaughter has started reading romance too. *lol* Publisher Simon & Schuster has a series going on. She's got "Cupidity" and "She's Got the Beat."

I can remember starting with Judy Blume's Forever and having my eyebrows singe off ...

Silma: I think that is wonderful! And I love the romances catered to young teens.
Jill: Heh. Tell me about it. I think I still have a copy around here somewheres.
